A lady handing out small c leaflets in the communityIn April 2013, Camden CCG commissioned London Cancer to undertake a three year programme to reduce avoidable deaths resulting from late diagnosis of cancer.

This programme aims to raise awareness of cancer signs and symptoms and improve cancer services in the Camden area through:

  • Online and social media campaigns – including promotion of the #smearforsmear campaign and development of the small c
  • Primary care professional development – running GP education events, conducting an audit of the route to diagnosis for upper and lower GI cancer patients in Camden and working in partnership with Cancer Research UK primary care facilitators.
  • A pilot community pharmacy campaign – providing training for pharmacists and pharmacy assistants on the three most common cancers to provide them with the skills to initiate conversations with customers and refer if needed.
  • Cancer pathway service improvements – addressing delays in presentation, referral, diagnostic tests and treatments.
